PART TWO: Reading 每小題五分
What caused the massive extinction of dinosaurs some 65 million years ago? Various theories have been proposed, including climatic changes caused by volcanic eruptions, and competition fir food from mammals. In 1980, Luis Alvarez and his son Walter proposed the comet-impact theory, now embraced by many as the most plausible theory of mass extinction.
At Different places around the world, there can be found a thin interface of gray clay between sedimentation of the late Cretaceous period below it and that of the Tertiary period above it. No dinosaur fossils have ever been found above the gray clay. The Alvarezes analyzed samples from the gray clay and found an abnormally high content of iridium, very rare on earth but abundant in comets and asteroids. After some calculations, they theorized that a comet eight kilometers in diameter hit the earth at 70 kilometers a second, 65 million years ago. The tremendous explosion sent into the atmosphere some 1,7000 cubic kilometers of debris, which almost completely blocked out sunlight.
Temperatures plummeted dinosaurs, was erased from the surface of the earth by a complete breakdown of the food chain. The debris eventually fell down and became the layer of gray clay that buried all dinosaurs underneath. William Boynton and Alan Hildebrand later discovered a crater 180 kilometers wide buried under Chicxulub City,
Mexico. The size of the crater matched the Alvarezes’ and fossil dating placed is formation at the end of the Cretaceous period. The discovery of the crater provided the missing link in the comet-impact theory, and has helped make it the reigning theory on dinosaur extinction.
1. With what is the passage mainly concerned?
A. the discovery of an underground crater
B. Several theories of dinosaur extinction
C. The comet-impact theory of dinosaur extinction
D. The formation of a layer of gray clay in geological records
2. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage as a possible

C. Mammals
D. Meteors
3. The word” embraced” in line 4 most closely means
A. hugged

4. It is implied in the passage that the high concentration of iridium in the
gray clay led the Alvarezes to surmise that
A. there was a huge volcanic explosion
B. iridium was not really rare on earth
C. the clay was poisonous to dinosaurs
D. the clay contained debris from a comet
